María T. Abreu, MD

María T. Abreu, MD is Professor of Medicine and Head of the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. Prior to joining the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2008, she was Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Dr. Abreu received her medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. She completed her internship and residency in medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and a fellowship in gastroenterology at UCLA.

Dr. Abreu is an active member of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) where she currently serves on the IBD Forum Planning Committee and the Ad Hoc Grants Review Committee. She also serves on the editorial board of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, the official journal of the CCFA, and is a reviewer for several other journals, including Gastroenterology, the Journal of Immunology, and the American Journal of Physiology. Dr Abreu is a standing member of an NIH grant review committee. Dr. Abreu is the author or co-author of more than 40 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and reviews. Her research interests are in the areas of the pathogenesis of IBD (especially the role of microbial antigens, Toll-like receptors, and the interactions between bacteria and intestinal epithelial cells), apoptosis in intestinal epithelial cells, and the treatment of Crohn’s disease with anti-TNF (tumor necrosis factor) and immunosuppressive agents.
